Coastal Living

Whether you live by the beach or just dream about ocean breezes, enhance the natural beauty of your home with crisp white, splashes of bold color, and sea-themed accents and these tips should help you on your journey to the Pacific Ocean and there a lot to choose from.

Aim for an airy feeling like you actually live near the coast (if you're not) and keep different shades of blue present and accounted for (also white) and it should remind you of how white the clouds are and how blue the sea is on the beach.

You can also have varieties in designing this kind of interior like sunset, summer or breeze. With hues of yellow, baby pink, dandelion, blue green and other shades of orange too.

Prints of sea creatures are the best help you can get (since it's sea themed) and words that reminds you of the sea are good too.

How to Use: Neutral Pillows

Neutral colors are deceiving. They look as if they're easy to style a room with, but they really aren't. Neutral colored pillows are tricky decorations, but if done well, can make a room look beautiful. It just depends on how you want your room to look. Do you want it to look fresh? Classy? Simple? Cozy? With the right pillows and furniture, you'll have your dream room in no time.

http://images.horchow.com/ca/1/products/mx/HC-3DLU_mx.jpg Simply put, neutral tones are usually those colours that give either a warm or cool vibe. They almost always go with other "stronger" colors.

To design a room with pillows of this tone, you first need to set your goal. What kind of room do you want to create? When using neutral pillows, it is best to know what your purpose is.

If you want to make a simple room with neutral pillows, then no problem. That might be the easiest design task you could ever encounter. You simply need to put together pillows of the same tone but with varying designs (such as the picture on the right). This will create a very posh look, that can be used for indoor and outdoor spaces.

Neutral toned pillows are great for neutralizing bright rooms, too. If you have a yellow couch and orange pillows, it would be ideal to neutralize the colors by adding a couple of neutral pillows. Just imagine staring at the sun. You'll want to cover your eyes with something, right? The neutral toned pillows will do the trick. It's also like having a dish that is too salty; you need something to make it less salty. It's all about the balance of the colors.

In the end, it is all up to how you want the room to look and feel like. Neutral colors can become your best friend if you know the basics. Once you've learned them, piecing together a room will not be much of a struggle anymore.

HWWD: Mongolian Lamb Pillows

Mongolian Lamb pillows are all the rage right now. These fluffy pillows give a room an instant spritz of sophistication with a hint of simplicity. It is not a surprise that many of these pillows have been reproduced in the market today. These are simply decorative elements no one can say no to.

However, many of those interested in lamb pillows have taken the wrong turn in terms of design. Sure, these pillows are gorgeous, but it takes a few tips to make them look more stunning when they're placed among an array of furniture. So can you decorate a space with these Mongolian Lamb pillows? Here's how we'd do it.

1. For complete sophistication and luxury, do not mix them with prints
Add them with monochromatic colors that go with the Mongolian Lamb pillows that you already have. Neutral tones such as gray, beige, tan, and even silver would look great with them.
2. Have to pillow shades that are alike, then one that is different
Take the picture above. It has two pillow shades in black and gray, and then one pillow in a coppery shade. The black and gray pillows will act as a "background" for the copper one, so that all of the attention is on the copper pillow. This way, your space will not look to dull.
3. Make sure your couch/sofa is a different texture
PLEASE do not put these pillows on a velvety couch or a faux fur-covered sofa. The textures should always compliment each other, meaning they should be opposites. Remember: opposites sometimes attract in design. Opt for a leather couch or a bench.
4. Make the colors stand out with a few copper pieces
Copper is "in" right now, so make use of that. Copper pieces like bowls and clocks will accompany the existing shades of your pillows, making them more prominent and important in the entire picture. Also, copper isn't so textured and it gives an edge to the fluffiness of the pillows. Again, opposites attract.

How would you design a room with Mongolian Lamb pillows?

Choosing the Right Pillow

Choosing the right pillow is essential to every man's life. Imagine waking up with a stiff neck, when you have a long day of work ahead of you. You wouldn't want that, would you? The right kind of pillow will help you have the best kind of rest you can have. The problem is that most people do not know how to find the right pillow. Thankfully, we are here to help you.

1. Get the right kind of support
You don't want to sleep stiffly, do you?
2. Know how you sleep
This might seem weird, but you should study how your body "moves" during sleep. Does your body opt to move to the left or to the right? Which way do you usually face? How does your head work? The answers to these questions will help you determine which pillow you need. It can determine the height of the pillow you should have.
3. Keep track of how old the pillow is
If your pillow is more than 18 months old, it is time to replace it. Pillows get saggier each time you use them, so having a new and fluffy pillow will ensure that you get the right kind of neck support. Also, old pillows have a lot of germs on them already, from sweat, drool, and etc. Sounds gross, but true.
4. Choose a pillow that is appropriate for your size
Basically, if you're a normal person, you won't need a huge pillow. If you have a bigger build, you might want to have a bigger pillow.
5. If possible, go for a hypoallergenic pillow
A LOT of stuff can accumulate on your pillow over time. Sufferers of asthma and allergies need to use hypoallergenic pillows to lessen the effects of having mold, dust, and etc. on pillows.

It may take some time for you to find the "perfect pillow" but when you do have it, you will have the best rest you've ever had. If we were to give one bit of advice, it is to invest in good pillows.

Parisian Princess

Arthouse Pillows is run by four girls, so it is not a surprise if we instantly accept a challenge to "spice up" a room like this. The owner of this room had just moved into the majestic estate, and she wanted to make her bedroom look classic and elegant, but still have a bit of a modern touch. The room itself was stunning without furniture. As you can see from the photo above, it already had mouldings and vintage artwork over the headboard.

Before our intervention, the queen-sized bed had an abundance of gigantic white pillows. Since all-white pillows are for hotels only (take note!) we decided to get rid of all of them. We then placed two fluffy white pillows, and two small brown pillows. By doing this, we are giving people something to focus on whenever they see the bed. Before, the bed was only white, and it looked flat because of that. Now, there is a focal point in the bed itself, and we're not even done with the rest of the room yet!

http://www.urbanthreads.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/pillows.jpg

The rest of the room was filled with many cream, bronze, and nude elements, so we decided to play with that. Wooden vintage furniture also spotted the room, and the owner wanted to keep them, so we ended up giving it something to contrast. We wanted the room to have a real Parisian feel, and having something printed would contradict that, so we went ahead and stitched on these cream pillows. The designs on the pillows are made of real French quotes and stamps, with the cursive handwriting as just a bonus. They turned out great, if we'd say so ourselves.

For the final touch, we made these beautiful vintage throwpillows for the huge walk-in closet/dressing room. The walk-in closet looked like it fit a queen, and it already had royal elements, so we just enhanced that with these. The black frilly outline of the pillows made them stand out among the various nude shades. These pillows were our favorite because they looked so elegant and feminine, and it made us feel like we were in Paris!

We are so happy to have worked on this project. If you're looking for similar products, please refer to our SHOP. If you want us to customize your pillows like we did here, please CONTACT US.

HWWD: Plain White Rooms

This is a new segment on the blog that we'd like to call "How We Would Decorate"! Basically, we are going to present ourselves with a design problem and we will fix it using our combined knowledge on architecture and interior design. Of course, we are also going to discuss how we can decorate the spaces with our many collections of pillows.

This week, we'll tackle the most common problem: plain white rooms. Plan white rooms are those rooms that are painted with white from floor to ceiling, and have the most pale floors one can imagine. Usually, one can find this kind of room at apartments and newly-renovated spaces. It isn't a surprise that there are so many white rooms these days, since people are opting for the minimal designs than the complicated ones. In this HWWD, we will address questions of those who want minimal spaces, and of those who want to splash color onto those white spaces.

FOR THE MINIMALIST
Go monochrome if you're aiming for that minimalist vibe. If you want it to be extra modern, go for whites and blacks! The white and black give off a sense of subtle sophistication, and it works for both male and female too.

It doesn't matter how many patterns of black and white you have, as long as you keep them even. Meaning, keep the ratio of big patterns to small patterns equal. Keep in mind that sizes of pieces matter, as well. Take this tip from us: a big rug will immediately fill up space, so be sure to find the best rug to make your space look cozy, but not too small.

FOR THE COLOURIST
Is that the right term? Anyway, for those who'd rather look at vibrant color, we have tips for you, too. What you want to do first is to cover up those walls. Choose big pieces such as the wall decoration below to instantly add something interesting to your bare walls. Our preference is to go with something neutral for walls so that you can do whatever you want with the rest of  your furniture. Then, pick another strong color and buy a few pieces of those in varying shades. After that, buy neutral pieces that go with your strong base color such as the black and white pillows and nude pillows in the photo below.

Don't pick too many colors or else it will look like someone spilled buckets of paint over your room! Stick to the nude and then add your few splashes of color. It will look sophisticated.

That's how we would decorate a boring white room. How would you do it? Tell us your design ideas in the comments section.

Kid at Heart

A few weeks ago, one of our clients named Erik came by the office to discuss what may be one of the most exciting projects we've had. Basically, we needed to decorate his new flat's living room with the masculine style he wanted. However, he also needed it to look, we quote, "Like the old kid that I was." We were confused with what to do, but we were also ridiculously thrilled to work on the project.

Fast forward, we came up with five throw pillow designs for Erik's living room. They featured distorted and "personified" characters, with mostly bears since Erik's hobby is bear watching. We decided to give these pillows a touch of hipster to suit Erik's taste. A twenty-something-year-old living by himself needs a cool pad where he can do his own thing, don't you think? We also thought the designs would be great conversation starters whenever Erik would throw a party.

Erik was ecstatic when we showed him our designs! We were so relieved that our hard work had paid off, and the only thing left to do was to print them on linen fabric. The outcome looked gorgeous with the paint as vibrant as ever, and the colors mixing perfectly. Our pillows fit right in with Erik's existing set of neutral-toned linen pillows.

Erik appreciated that the designs weren't as childish as he had expected. He expressed his enthusiasm about their childlike feel and nostalgia, but above all, he was grateful that they reminded him of the joys of being a kid.

There is a "huge" debate on whether His &  Her Pillows are appropriate or not, but if you ask us, we think they're adorable!

They are simple, but they still give life to a seemingly dull room. The handwritten text that is placed on mostly all of the His & Her Pillows looks so elegant and cute, especially when the base color of the pillow is white. You can actually add these pillows to any kind of color scheme because they will fit in nicely, no matter what.

His & Her Pillows are also lovely as a reminder of a couple's love for each other. Each morning they wake up, they'll see these pillows and the person laying next to them. And each night, they'll see these first and remember how much they care for each other. His & Her Pillows are a great gift to newly married couples, or even to those couples who've decided to move in together! Both of them will appreciate it.

Do you think His & Her Pillows are cute? Let us know down below! And if you like them, maybe you'll like our new collection of His & Her Pillows in the SHOP.
